I was around 18-19 playing some 3-on-3s at the open courts with various "regulars" from late teens to their 40s, and one day there was a famous retired soccer pro there (Nikos Anastopoulos) in his mid 40s. The small "technical" striker type, at 5' 9", shorter than most players there and not even muscular looking, yet no-one could keep up with him at all :D Good thing no old basketball pros showed up...

not all ex-nba players are as good as scalabrine after they retire. i used to play against a.c. earl now and then like 10 years ago and all he would do is shoot deep 3's and play very little defense. he was a pretty decent nba player for a couple of years but as a 40 year old rec center player i wouldnt even want him on my team.

I remember in my high school history class a question came up: Could the best college football team beat a really bad team like the cleveland browns (Or the worst NFL team)? Well, my teacher responded that it wouldn't even be close between an NFL team and a College football team. Why? Because an NFL football team comprises of players that were all drafted, including some of the best prospects. The same cannot be said about college football teams, even the best.

I mean its not that shocking. You know how you go to work for 8 hours a day and build a proficiency at whatever you do. They do that with basketball. Maybe not in the same fashion of 9-5, but it is not shocking. I don't buy though that if you put in the same number of hours you couldn't find a way. Mugsy boges was 5'3" and found a way to put ups shots on 6'3 guards. The guy out of Oregon scalibrene faced off with took 3. He didn't go through a 10 year period of getting paid to play.

I always think how unbelievably good you have to be to warm up, sit down for an hour or so, get put in a game, and make the first shot you get with a hand in your face in front of thousands. Knowing that if you miss it. Might be a while until you get another.

A visual example of how great NBA players are at basketball. A below average NBA player who has been retired for nearly a decade easily defeated a good HS player. The crazy part is that none of the NBA players were going at them 100 percent. Imagine how much better Lebron James and Giannis is than if a below average NBA player is this good.

This is what average dudes don’t understand about the WNBA. The worst women in the league are BOTH 10 times worse than the worst NBA player and 100 times better than a recreational player. Sure the WNBA best are about equal to an average D2 men’s player but a D2 player was the star at his high school and only got bigger, faster and better. It’s not an insult to compare them to good college players.

This was great. It is the same in any profession. An average joe going against someone in a career as a professional. I’m a musician and was good in high school and college. I know a few retired professionals that played my instrument, Trumpet. When you see and hear what they can do, it’s nightmarish. There is a reason they can non-stop for almost 24 hours; a reason they can hang a trumpet on a string and tighten their embouchure (lips) a go up 4 octaves until the horn sounds like a whistle or demonstrate valve and tongue so fast that it is a blur. Professional tennis, track, swimming, etc. it doesn’t matter, Pros are pros for a reason and do what the public doesn’t do
